About speaker:

  • Dr. Sergej O. Demokritov, Professor of Institute for Applied Physics, University Münster

Sergej O. Demokritov was born in Russia in 1959. He graduated from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1982 and has got his PhD from Kapitza Institute for Physical Problems, Moscow, where he was working till he moved to Germany in 1993.

After has been working at Forschungszentrum Jülich and University Kaiserslautern in 2004 he has grounded a group of Nonlinear Magnetic Dynamics at Institute for Applied Physics, University Münster, Germany. During his work in Jülich together with Prof. P. Grünberg (Nobel Prize Winner in physics 2007) he has discovered biquadratic interlayer coupling in magnetic multilayers.

  • His work in Kaiserslautern has been marked by observation of spin wave quantization, spin wave well effect and spin wave tunnelling in magnetic nanoelements.

His research team in Münster studies the nonlinear dynamics and quantum thermodynamics in magnetic nanostructures. Prof Demokritov was the first scientist who built the experimental set up being able to visualize “Magnon Bose Einstein Condensation observed directly in K space”. The work of Prof. Demokritov on Bose-Einstein Condensation of Magnon was selected by the Institute of Pyhsics (UK) among 12 the most important achievements in physics in 2006. In 2007 Prof. Demokritov was included into the list «SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN 50». This award honors 50 individuals, teams, companies and other organizations whose accomplishments in research, business or policymaking demonstrate outstanding technological leadership.

  • Prof. Demokritov is the author of 19 books, book chapters, monographs, and review articles, 169 original papers in peer reviewed journals, including: Nature (2), Nature Materials (2), Phys. Rev. Lett. (22), Appl. Phys. Lett. (24) H-index: 31. Sum of the times cited: 3591.

Prof. Demokritov has long history of scientific cooperation with NT-MDT resulting in several patents. His inventions are successfully implemented in the MFM related models on the NTEGRA platform (Prima, Aura), as well as in SOLVER Next, SOLVER HV-MFM and some others.
